The discount price formula
The formula is simple:
Discounted price = Original price x (1 – Discount / 100)
And your savings are: Savings = Original price – Discounted price.
Worked example in rupees
A jacket costs Rs 4,500 and the shop offers 20% off. First convert the discount: 20 / 100 = 0.20. Then 1 – 0.20 = 0.80. Multiply: 4,500 x 0.80 = Rs 3,600. You pay Rs 3,600 and save Rs 900.
Another one: a phone listed at Rs 85,000 with 12% off. 85,000 x (1 – 0.12) = 85,000 x 0.88 = Rs 74,800. Your saving: Rs 10,200.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Do not subtract the percentage directly — Rs 4,500 minus 20 is not 20% off.
- Check whether the discount applies before or after tax.
- For bundle offers, work out the per-item price so you can compare fairly.
