Brought a phone from abroad, or planning to buy one? Before it works on a Pakistani mobile network, it usually has to be registered with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) through DIRBS, and tax is charged at registration. This guide explains what that tax is, what it is made of, and how to work it out — and you can get your own figure in seconds with the PTA Tax Calculator Pakistan.
What PTA tax is and when it applies
“PTA tax” is the common name for the taxes and levies charged when an imported mobile phone is registered for use in Pakistan. It applies to phones brought in from abroad that are not already registered on PTA’s system. A phone that is not registered may be blocked from Pakistani networks after the allowed period, so it is worth checking the cost before you travel or buy.
The amount depends mainly on the phone’s assessed value in US dollars, the exchange rate on the day you pay, whether you register on a passport or a CNIC, and — on the CNIC route — whether you are a filer or a non-filer.
The tax components
For 2026–27, the calculator page sets out five parts, charged by value band:
- Customs duty: a flat Rs 250 per set, in every band.
- Regulatory duty: a fixed amount per band under SRO 1064(I)/2026 — from Rs 240 (up to US$ 30) up to Rs 17,600 (above US$ 500).
- Sales tax: 18% on phones valued up to US$ 500, and 25% above US$ 500, charged on the rupee value plus customs duty plus regulatory duty.
- Mobile handset levy: Rs 100 (up to US$ 30), rising to Rs 8,000 (US$ 500–700) and Rs 16,000 (above US$ 700).
- Income tax (Section 148): charged on the CNIC route only — Rs 100 (up to US$ 30) to Rs 11,500 (above US$ 500) for filers. Non-filers pay double income tax, and no income tax is charged on the passport route.
Worked example: a US$ 600 phone
The following example is taken from the PTA Tax Calculator Pakistan page itself: a US$ 600 smartphone registered on a CNIC by a filer, at Rs 276.71 per dollar.
- Rupee value = 600 × 276.71 = Rs 166,026.00. Value band: US$ 500 to 700.
- Customs duty = Rs 250.00.
- Regulatory duty = Rs 17,600.00.
- Sales tax = 25% × (166,026.00 + 250.00 + 17,600.00) = Rs 45,969.00.
- Mobile handset levy = Rs 8,000.00.
- Income tax (Section 148, filer, CNIC) = Rs 11,500.00.
- Total PTA tax = Rs 83,319.00.
Enter 600, 276.71, CNIC and filer in the calculator and you will get exactly this breakdown.
How to use the calculator
- Open the PTA Tax Calculator Pakistan.
- Enter the phone’s customs value in US dollars — FBR’s assessed value for that model, which can differ from what you paid.
- Check the exchange rate (the tool uses a November 2026 approximate of Rs 280 per dollar, but you can edit it).
- Choose passport or CNIC, and filer or non-filer.
- Click “Estimate PTA tax” to see the full breakdown.
Tips to avoid surprises
- Budget using FBR’s assessed value for your exact model, not the shop price or the price in another currency.
- Remember that sales tax is charged on the rupee value plus customs and regulatory duty, not on the phone value alone.
- If you can register on a passport, no income tax is added; on a CNIC, a non-filer pays double income tax.
- Recheck the exchange rate on the day you pay, because DIRBS uses that day’s rate.

Estimate only — please note
ESTIMATE ONLY: This guide and the calculator give an estimate for planning only — they are not your tax bill. The final tax is set by FBR/PTA (through DIRBS) at registration, using FBR’s assessed value for the exact model and the exchange rate on the day you pay. If your figure differs from the DIRBS figure, the DIRBS figure is final.
